Hijab Ban Issue: Split verdict by SC

It is known that the hijab ban issue in Karnataka has reached the Supreme Court after the state high court supported the ban of all religious dresses, including hijab, in educational institutes.

In the latest development, the Supreme Court today gave a split verdict on the appeals, challenging the restriction on Muslim girl students wearing hijab in educational institutes.

While Justice Hemant Gupta upheld the Karnataka government’s order of enforcing uniform a proper dress code and banning religious outfits, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, in a varying opinion, allowed the appeals and said that it was a matter of choice of Muslim women, “nothing less than nothing more”.

The two-judge bench ordered that the case be placed before the Chief Justice of India for assigning the matter to a three-judge bench.
