Harrapan city Dholavira gets World Heritage site tag

Dholavira, a Harappan-era city in Gujarat, has been declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO Heritage Committee. The decision was taken at the 44th meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which is being held online from China.

As per reports, Dholavira is one of the two largest Harappan sites in India. The periodic city, which dates back to over 4500 years ago, is also the fifth-largest in the subcontinent.

With the latest addition, Gujarat now has four world heritage sites — Dholavira, Champaner near Pavagadh, Rani ki Vav in Patan and the historic city of Ahmedabad. Telangana’s Ramappa Temple got the same recognition.

Reacting to the development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he was ‘absolutely delighted’ by this news and also shared some of his pictures when he visited Dholavira as the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

Areas of natural and cultural significance are thus recognized as World Heritage Sites. This recognition is given to current and future generations with common priorities.
