Directed by Ritesh Rana, Happy Birthday starring Lavanya Tripathi, Vennela Kishore, Sathya among others in key roles has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.
Story:
Cashing in on the gun amendment bill passed by the defence minister Rithvik Sodhi( Vennela Kishore) public starts purchasing and using guns on a wide note. Later, the location shifts to Ritz Grand hotel where Happy( Lavanya Tripathi) comes to celebrate her surprise birthday party. What kind of peculiar incidents happens in the hotel? How various characters make an entry into the proceedings? What is the key twist in the tale? To know that, you have to watch the film in the cinemas near you.
On screen performances:
Lavanya Tripathi did justice to her role. Her charm and screen presence add freshness to the film. The way she carried the multi dimensional character with her effortless acting brings depth to the proceedings.
Comedian Satya gets a solid role. His jovial role evokes good fun at regular intervals. Actor Naresh Agastya gave decent performance in his key role.
While Vennela Kishore is okay in his peculiar character as a defence minister, other artists who are seen in supporting roles okay in their respective characters.
Off-screen Talents:
While the songs composed by Kaala Bhairava are disappointing, he score big with his impressive background score.
The photography by Suresh Sarangam is nice as he brought the colourful texture to the film with his framing. Editing by Karthika Srinivas fails to click. The three hours runtime is nothing but a test to your patience.
The VFX and graphics work for the new world created for the movie is good. The production values are lavish.
Director Ritesh Rana’s idea of picking a surreal comedy concept is good but the unique set up created lacks a proper establishment and engaging narrative. Though all the characters come into the proceedings are okay with their performance, lack of proper detailing dilutes the purpose.
Positive Points:
Negative Points:
Verdict:
In an overview, Happy Birthday is a silly comedy drama that has fun moments in the narrative. The unengaging presentation and lengthy runtime come as major minus points for the movie. Skip it theatrically and watch when premiered on OTT platform if you have enough time.
