Andhra Pradesh Chief Minsiter YS Jagan Mohan Reddy always boasts about his Navaratnalu scheme, of which alcohol prohibition in the state is a part. He has taken some measures in that stead, perhaps, by only allowing government shops in the state to sell liquor. In fact, he even made sure that not much branded liquor is sold in the state, with local liquor being sold all the time. This resulted in a major backlash, as even the local liquor was sold at insane prices and was even negatively affecting the health of those who consumed it. As a result, the government was forced to let some branded liquor be sold again in the state.
Now, the government has changed its stance on alcohol, changing its alcohol prohibition scheme to alcohol control. This is said to be due to the huge revenues that are generated from the sale of alcohol. It is also being said that the AP government has decided to let private organizations sell alcohol once again. Just last year, the government generated a revenue of Rs. 20,000 Crores by selling alcohol worth Rs. 25,000 Crores. While this is a huge amount, the government is said to be upset because of this.
With the government-owned shops generating a minimum of Rs. 19,000 Crores revenue every year, the government is said to be expecting revenue worth Rs. 3,000 Crores in the case of private shops. Moreover, the government would additional money, to the tune of at least Rs. 1,000 Crores from the application fee, registration fee, license fee, etc., from private shops.
