Right after the death of Tamil Nadu‘s Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, her close aidee and friend, Sasikala, was made the chief of the AIADMK party for a while. Shortly after that, she was expelled from the party, and sent to jail. Sasikala was released from jail in January.
With her release from jail being timed so close to the upcoming Tamil Nadu general elections, everyone thought that Sasikala would try to get back to power in the AIADMK and even contest in the upcoming elections.
However, in an unexpected turn of events, Sasikala released a public statement, saying that she was never behind power even when Jayalalithaa was alive, and that she’s not after power even now. She also said that she wouldn’t want to be in politics or in the public’s eye right now, especially after Jayalalithaa’s death, as it doesn’t feel right to her.
Sasikala said that she wishes that the AIADMK party wins in the upcoming elections, and that Jayalalithaa’s legacy continues.
