Droupadi Murmu has been elected as the new president of India after defeating Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha on Thursday.
Apparently, Murmu has become India’s 15th President and the first tribal leader to hold the top constitutional post in the country. She succeeded Ram Nath Kovind, whose tenure is ending on July 24. The new president will take an oath on July 25.
Meanwhile, wishes are pouring in for Murmu. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, have also congratulated her on becoming the President.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India scripted history with the win of Murmu. “At a time when 1.3 billion Indians are marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a daughter of India hailing from a tribal community born in a remote part of eastern India has been elected our President! Congratulations to Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji on this feat,” he wrote in a series of Tweets.
“Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji has been an outstanding MLA and Minister. She had an excellent tenure as Jharkhand Governor. I am certain she will be an outstanding President who will lead from the front and strengthen India’s development journey,” another tweet of Modi read.
Outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind wrote on Twitter, “Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Smt. Droupadi Murmu on being elected as the 15th President of India.”
