There’s a lot of competition going around regarding the Munugode by-elections. Every major party in Telangana is trying to assert its power and create a stronger base for itself, by winning these elections. As such, it has become a major hub for undemocratic practices.
By the basic definition of democracy, people should elect their leaders based on the promises that the leaders make, and how well they implement their promises once they come to power. However, all of this has now come down to monetary power, with the people of Telangana at least, seeming to care less about the promises that leaders are making, and more about how much money they would get in return for their vote.
From some voters directly telling the media that they aren’t going to vote because they haven’t received money, to some denying to vote because they haven’t been paid enough, democracy in Telangana seems to have gone for a toss, with only monetary politics taking center stage. This also makes one question if the leaders that created such sort of a trend in the state are truly worth being kept in position or not.
