As poor people being increasingly grown with hunger pangs and facing hardships in Delhi, centre and state Government took an initiative to provide cooked meals to the needy in government schools and night shelters. Thousands of migrant workers and daily wage workers have crowded at Delhi’s border and plans are effectively being made to provide them with food and shelter.
The Delhi government made lunch and dinner available to around 6 lakh poor people on Thursday.
“We began feeding 3.5 lakh-4 lakh people everyday and we will extend to 10-12 lakh people from tomorrow. We’ve noticed that people are flocking at the food centres hence we decided to establish more centres,” said Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday.
The food centres reportedly provided lunch to 585386 people and dinner for 579162 people in around 1,423 centres located across the city.
The government has also announced that under window pension scheme, it has doubled the pension for 2.5 lakh beneficiaries, old-age pension scheme for 5 lakh beneficiaries, and disability pension scheme for 1 lakh beneficiaries. It also stated that families under the public distribution system are going to get 1.5 times of the actual value of the ration for free, which is valid till the month of April.
