Covid-19 vaccine: Did Oxford cover up dose mishap among participants?

Vaccine overdose or adverse drug reactions have been quite common in the history of vaccine development. With the mounting pressure amid covid-19 vaccine development, Oxford apparently have taken a wrong step.

Around 1,500 of the volunteers participated in a late-stage clinical preliminary of the Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccination were given some unacceptable portion of the dose, yet weren’t educated that a miscalculation had been made after the botch was found and it was later covered up, reports revealed.

Nonetheless, the dosing mishap was introduced to the participants in a letter dated June 8 as a chance for University of Oxford analysts to figure out how well the antibody functions at various dosages. The letter was endorsed by the trial’s main agent, Oxford principal investigator Andrew J. Pollard and sent to the preliminary subjects.

As Reuters investigated further, members were given about a half portion because of an estimating dosing error by Oxford specialists. The Pollard letter didn’t recognize any mistake. Nor did it unveil that scientists had revealed the issue to British clinical controllers, who at that point advised Oxford to add another experimental group to get the full dose.

Steve Pritchard, an Oxford’s spokesman, stated: “The half-dose group was unplanned, but we did know in advance that there was a discrepancy in the dose measurements and discussed this with the regulators”.

However, ethicists said it should have been well informed in prior to the trial participants about the changes.
