Consumer court fines BookMyShow, INOX for charging Convenience fee

Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has fined BookMyShow and INOX movies based on a complaint filed by a Hyderabad resident.

In response to the complaint of Harshavardhan Deole in June 2019, the Commission has levied a file of Rs 10,000 for charging convenience fee in a ticket sale. As per reports, when the complainant booked a ticket, he was charged a convenience fee of Rs 59.46 extra than the original price.

As this contrast with the RBI norms, the complainant asked for compensation and a refund for charging extra money. However, he hasn’t received a positive response from them. The BookMyShow denied these complaints, saying that it charged as per rules.

After examining all the details, the Commission clarified that RBI has not authorised the online booking platform to charge extra from the customers. Therefore, it asked BookMyShow to refund the extra charged amount from the customer and the commission also asked both BookMyShow and INOX movies to pay a Rs 10,000 compensation along with another Rs 10,000 for litigation charges.
