Butta Bomma Review: Nothing beyond a faithful remake

Anikha Surendran is making her Tollywood debut as a leading lady with the film Buttabomma, which is an official remake of the Malayalam film Kappela. The film has been released today and let’s see how it has turned out to be.

Story:

Buttabomma is about a teen girl who accidentally ends up calling an auto driver Murali and falls in love with him. When she and Murali plan to meet, they notice that they are being followed by a man named Ramakrishna. Who is Ramakrishna and why is he following them forms the rest of the story.

On-Screen Performances:

Anikha Surendran is already an established actress, who has been working in films for quite some time now, as a child actress. Her acting prowess is seen very clearly in Buttabomma, in which she carries the entire film on her shoulders. She has made a very good debut in the film with Buttabomma and is very good in her role as Satya. She managed to catch the essence of her character and gave an earnest performance.

Surya Vasishta, who made his debut with this film, is also good in his role. While the movie is his debut film, his acting is very mature and he has done his part quite well.

Actor Arjun Das doesn’t have a lot of screen space, but whatever he’s given to do, he does very well.

The rest of the supporting cast is good in their parts.

Off-Screen Talents:

The director has done a good job of remaking Kappela in Telugu. The essence of the original has not been tampered with, and Buttabomma is a faithful remake of the original. However, the screenplay of the film is a major minus. The pacing is another minus for the film. The first half feels like a huge drag and is not interesting enough. Had the pacing of the film been any faster, the movie would have been so much better. While the second half of the film is good, the first half seriously weighs down the film. The film has a very important message at its core, and it would have made a huge impact had it been told in a crisp manner. This is exactly what’s missing in Buttabomma.

The background music by Gopi Sundar is a good asset for the film. The cinematography and the production design of the film are good. The editing could have been so much better, though.

Plus Points:

  • Message of the film
  • Lead actors performances

Minus Points:

  • First half
  • Weak screenplay
  • Slow pacing

Verdict: Buttabomma is a faithful adaptation of its original. The movie can be watched once for the themes that it tackles with. However, if you have watched the original, it can be skipped.
