AP-TS water issue: Jagan calls for high-level meeting

Tensions are running high between the governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as water sharing dispute is intensifying by the day. The representatives of both the state government are making contradicting statements in this regard.

The government of Telangana says Andhra Pradesh is illegally using more water than instructed by Krishna Water Tribunal. The chief minister KCR himself said that the government of Andhra Pradesh is irking Telangana government by drawing more water than advised.

Amidst all the high drama, Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jagan has called for a high-level meeting today. He will be discussing the future strategies of Andhra Pradesh government as to Krishna water dispute.

“We are not holding any new water projects. Rayalaseema lift irrigation would only supplement the existing projects and no new canals will be constructed in the process. It cannot be called a new project as it was proposed in 2015 itself,” Jagan wrote to Jal Shakthi minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat who ordered both the governments not to go ahead with new projects till prompted.

In response to Telangana government’s allegation, Andhra Pradesh government says, “Even Telangana government is carrying out new projects and violating reorganisation act, 2014.”

The tug of war between the governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana regarding water dispite is slowly turning ugly with political colors blooming over it. With so much going on, Jagan’s high-level meeting with concerned authorities has attained a lot of prominence.
