The Andhra Pradesh government has approached the Supreme Court to challenge the March 3 judgement of the state high court declaring Amaravati as the only capital of the state.
The AP high court in its order on March 3 had directed that the ruling YSRCP government, led by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, should construct and develop Amaravati capital city and region within six months as per the agreement made by CRDA with the farmers.
Pronouncing the verdict, a bench comprising chief justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and justices D V S S Somyajulu and Ch Manaventranath Roy said that the state Assembly does not have the power to make laws on the capital.
The AP government has recently filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the orders of the High Court. The petition said that the state wants to set up three capitals for the decentralization of administration. It said that the High Court’s judgment is a debilitation of the legislative system. The state government has appealed to the Supreme Court to stay the orders given by the AP Court.
