AP government resorts to lottery system for funds

The financial situation of the Andhra Pradesh government got worse due to the coronavirus pandemic, due to which the AP government is neck-deep in debts right now. The government has not been able to get many funds from the people of the state in the form of taxes, due to GST and other central government-imposed taxes. As a result, the AP government has now come up with a new idea to raise funds in the state.

The AP government is said to be planning to introduce a lottery system to raise funds. This method is already being implemented by other state governments like Goa and Sikkim and 13 other states. However, this is the first time that the AP government is doing it. The government can also increase the taxes on alcohol, but it had already increased the taxes on alcohol by 75% during the lockdown.

As a result, the AP government has decided to go ahead with the lottery system. While this system is working out in other states, it is now to be seen how it will pan out for the AP government.
