The number of fires in Amazon forest may have set a new record, with fires in the region filling the Brazilian sky with smoke.
Reacting to the issue, NASA released a note, that read, “Although it is not unusual to see fires in Brazil at this time of year due to high temperatures and low humidity it seems this year the number of fires may be record-setting.”
Currently, 73000 fires have been recorded till date, space research centre INPE revealed. It is seeing an 83% increase over the same period in 2018. The smoke has reached all the way to Sao Paulo, more than 1,700 miles away. The Amazon is identified for producing 20% of the oxygen in the Earth’s atmosphere and is so referred as the planet’s lungs.
