AIIMS report first covid induced nerve damage in paediatric group

New Delhi-based All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has reported Covid-19-induced brain nerve damage for the first time in a 11 year old girl, which has caused her a blurred vision.

The doctors in the child neurology department are incessantly working to report on her health condition and also striving to make it publicly available as a published article. Covid infected patients had often passed away especially while having comorbidities like heart failure or renal failure. However, it was only determined as just another diseased condition. But the nerve damage in the girl’s case was likely to be found as a complication occurred due to covid in children as per AIIMS officials.

“We have found Covid-19 infection-induced Acute Demyelinating Syndrome (ADS) in an 11-year-old girl. This is the first case that has been reported in the paediatric age group,” draft of the report read. Dr Sheffali Gulati, chief, child neurology division, department of paediatrics, AIIMS stated that the doctors have found ADS in MRI scan, which damages brain and lungs.

The nerves are protected with a layer called myelin sheath that facilitates messages from the brain move swiftly and smoothly through the body. ADS triggers illness that damage myelin, brain signals and affect many neurological functions, which include vision, muscle movement, senses, bladder and bowel movement etc.

The girl under Dr Gulati’s care has recuperated to great extent with immunotherapy and reportedly she was discharged after 50% improvement in vision.
