Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud has taken over as the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI), replacing 49th CJI Uday Umesh Lalit today.
President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday administered the oath of office to DY Chandrachud, who was elevated to the Apex Court in May 2016.
The new CJI will have a term of two years as the head of the judiciary and will vacate the top post on November 10, 2024.
Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud is the son of former Chief Justice of India, YV Chandrachud. Interestingly, they are the only father-son duo to have served as CJIs. The father of the newly elevated top judge has the distinction of being the longest-serving CJI, from February 1978 and July 1985.
