Almost every state in the country has canceled board exams of 10th and 12th class students, except the government of Andhra Pradesh. Opposition party leaders and others have been expressing their continuous disdain and opposition to the government’s relentless idea of conducting the exams without fail. Yet, the government continues to stand on its decision.

Chief Minister Jagan, in a recent statement, said that it is important for a student’s marks to be reflected on their certificate as it would be proof of their academic excellence, and help them in getting good job opportunities. He said that students would lose out on good job opportunities if they were passed on without exams and that he can’t let that happen as he is accountable to every employer and employee.

This statement from Jagan begs one to question the necessity and importance of all the coronavirus protocols that have been put in place in the state of AP, to curb the spread of the virus. All the night curfews, held back wedding and funeral capacities and mini lockdowns are useless when the government continues to be relentless in its pursuit of conducting board exams, which poses a great danger to the thousands of students who would have to sit together in a room, writing an exam, and getting scared of being infected by the virus all the while.

What use are marks of, when a person is not alive? Is life not mere important than any marks or certificate? Aren’t all the states that canceled their board exams equally answerable to their people, with regards to job opportunities?

When members of the ruling party who tested positive for the virus are running to other states themselves for treatment, and when people in AP are suffering due to a shortage of hospital beds, is it not in the government’s interest to protect their students? It is high time the AP government reviews its actions.
