Check marks the coming together of creative filmmaker Chandra Sekhar Yeleti and youthful hero, Nithiin. Touted to be a suspense thriller, Check has Nithiin , Rakul Preet Singh, and Priya Prakash Varrier in the lead roles. The film hit the big screens today.
Story: In 2014, a terrorist attack kills 40 people. Aditya (Nithiin) and 4 others are accused of the hideous crime and they are sentenced to death. Aditya claims that he is innocent and asks the court to assign him a lawyer to file an appeal. This is when Maanasa(Rakul Preet), a budding lawyer takes up the case and argues in favour of Aditya. Meanwhile, Aditya learns Chess during his time in jail and those around him believe he has the potential to become a grandmaster. Can Aditya prove he is innocent? How does his mastery in chess help him? The core plot of the film answers these questions.
What about on-screen performances?
Nithiin plays a prisoner on death sentence, who is also exceedingly good in the game of Chess and this is unfamiliar territory for him as he has mostly been playing boy-next-door roles all through his career. But he delivers a very good performance. Rakul Preet Singh plays a lawyer and she is in her elements. Priya Prakash Varrier is seen as Nithiin’s love interest and she adds some glamour quotient. Sai Chand gets a meaty role and he emotes well.
What about off-screen talents?
Chandra Sekhar Yeleti is known for making films with unconventional plots and is usually good at narrating his stories with emotional connect. But that is not the case with Check. The screenplay is way to monotonous. Everyone in the story acts according to the male lead’s interests and the narrative is very convenient. There are many loose ends as well. There are several logical errors in the plot and that takes a toll on the novelty. This film will probably be on the bottom of Chandra Sekhar Yeleti’s works.
Kalyani Malik’s background score is compelling and elevates the mood. Rahul Srivastav’s cinematography is decent. The jail set-up is believable, thanks to some good work by the art direction department.
- Nithiin’s Performance
- Artwork and Music
- Unconvincing screenplay
- Insipid narration
- Literally zero emotional connect
- Repetitive scenes
Verdict: Chandrasekhar Yeleti is one of the versatile and technically sound filmmakers in Tollywood. The expectations are high on Check, but sadly he fails to match the expectations. Nithiin does well in a challenging role, but his efforts go in vein, owing to poor narration. As a whole, Check is a poorly written suspense thriller.
