Neeraj Chopra has created history for India by winning a gold medal – the country’s first medal in athletics in the history of the Olympics. He becomes only the second Indian athlete after Abhinav Bindra to clinch a gold medal in an individual event for India.
Since the inception of the men’s javelin throw final, Chopra was seen in red hot form and none of the other competitors could come close to him.
The athlete, who hails from Haryana, threw a monstrous 87.58, and he did not even have to throw on his sixth attempt. He had thrown 87.03, 87.58 and 76.79 on his first three throws and fouled on his fourth and fifth.
With this sensational win, India has recorded its best-ever medal haul in the Olympics. The country has won seven medals, including one gold, two silvers and three bronze at the Tokyo Olympics. The wait for over 100 years to clinch the first medal in the track and field category has ended with Neeraj Chopra’s performance.
