India’s medal count in Tokyo Olympics has increased to 6 after wrestler Bajrang Punia won a bronze medal playing against Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan on Saturday (August 7).
Punia dominated the proceedings throughout and won with a scoreline of 8-0. He lost his semi-final on Friday but made a strong comeback to bring home the medal glory. With this win, India equalled its best-ever Olympic medal haul of 6 medals.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and heaped praise on the freestyle wrestler, who won the country second medal in wrestling in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.
“Delightful news from #Tokyo2020! Spectacularly fought @BajrangPunia. Congratulations to you for your accomplishment, which makes every Indian proud and happy,” PM Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter.
“BRONZE Third place medal for BAJRANG!!! YOU DID IT! India is thrilled beyond words! I am so proud of you, loved watching your dominating performance and spectacular finish! #Tokyo2020 @BajrangPunia,” wrote Sports Minister Anurag Thakur.
It is worthy to mention that this was Bajrang Punia’s maiden Olympics.
