The traditional ‘Giri Pradakshina’ ritual will be celebrated at various places in Puttur, Nagari, Srikalahasti, Chandragiri, and Punganur this month.
On this day, people say that hundreds of people revolve around Shiva temples on the banks of the river Neeva and will perform rituals for their departed family members and give alms to the poor. This book is 500 years old.
The city’s various streets, most recently whitewashed, are wearing a fresh look. The natives of Chittoor will participate in the famous goat festival around the Bodikonda hill, and pray on the mountain of Lord Venkateswara. People from Chittoor and surrounding areas have to visit the Vellimalai hill near Sholingur in Tamil Nadu, 20 km from here, to participate in the Giri Pradakshina program.
A historic Chandragiri fort town also follows a 500-year-old ritual, which is associated with the Makar Sankranti festival with the temple of Goddess Moolasthaneshwar Yellamma.
Bull racing events will be organized in many districts, mostly in the Kuppam region, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. Villagers say that these races conducted peacefully. Rooster fights are frequent in parts of the western divisions, particularly in the Parlor region.
