A day after Justice NV Ramana retired, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit took oath as the 49th Chief Justice of India on Saturday.
President of India Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office of the CJI at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
However, Justice Lalit will have a short tenure of 74 days as the head of India’s judiciary, as he will retire on November 8 this year.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union ministers were present at the oath-taking ceremony. Justice NV Ramana also attended it.
For the unversed, Justice Lalit was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court on August 13, 2014. He will be the second CJI who was directly elevated to the Supreme Court bench from the Bar after Justice SM Sikri in 1971.
