American technology giant Google Inc on Wednesday told the Delhi High Court that the new Information Technology Rules 2021 did not apply to them as it was a search engine and not a social media platform like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
It also appealed to the High Court to stay the execution of the judgment passed by the unanimous tribunal, making itself liable for the removal of the objectionable content on the Internet.
The tech firm requested the HC to revoke its April 20 order which applied the Information Technology Rules 2021 to the company, while handling an issue related to the elimination of disturbing content from the Internet.
Responding to Google’s plea, a bench of Chief Justice D.N. Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh issued notice to the Centre, Delhi government, Internet Service Providers’ Association of India, Facebook, the pornographic site and the woman on whose plea the April 20 order was passed.
The court said it would not issue any interim order at this stage and adjourned the case for further hearing on July 25.
