Adoni, which currently is a part of the Kurnool district, has been a municipality for over 152 years. The people of Adoni have been demanding that Adoni be made a separate district for a really long time now, as the area remains very much neglected by everyone as it lies on the border of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Adoni is also 150 KM away from the district headquarters, which is Kurnool, which only adds to its many problems.
With new districts having been announced by the Andhra Pradesh government, the movement for the demand that Adoni is made a separate district has gained momentum, with the people carrying out relentless protests ever since the announcement of new districts. While they have been hoping that the local MLAs, all of them from the YSRCP, will join them, they are keeping eerily silent.
All the four MLAs, one of whom is a minister, are empathising with the people of Adoni, but are unable to support the people or join them in their protests, as they are afraid of the repercussions they might have to face if they go against the Chief Minister. Adoni is a region with 17658 sq km and a 45 lakh population, and the people feel that their demand for Adoni to be made a district is not unjust at all. While the MLAs are trying to slow down the agitation, there seems to be no sign of that. It is now to be seen what will happen.
