Former Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MCA) member Sanjeev Gupta has objected to the appointment of former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni as a mentor to India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Sanjeev sent his objection with the BCCI apex council, citing the conflict of interest clause in the Lodha Committee reforms. According to BCCI rules, a person cannot continue in two different positions. Therefore, appointing former captain Dhoni as the T20 World Cup mentor is not valid, he said in the letter. Dhoni is also captain of the Chennai Super Kings IPL franchise.
“Yes, Gupta has sent a letter to apex council members, including Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah. He has cited clause 38 (4) of the BCCI constitution, which loosely states that one person cannot be holding two separate posts. The Apex Council will need to consult its legal team to check the ramifications,” a BCCI source told.
During the announcement of the T20 World Cup squad on Wednesday, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced that Dhoni would be appointed as the mentor for Team India. MSD’s appointment as a mentor has been hailed by all. The Ranchi Dynamite, who was the most successful captain in the history of Indian cricket, became the only captain to win the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup.
