Indian boxing star MC Mary Kom has bowed out of Tokyo Olympics after losing to Colombia’s Ingrit Lorena Victoria Valencia in women’s 51kg by 3:2 split decision. At the end of the fight, the referee raised her opponent’s arm, and the legendary boxer broke down in tears.
As the fight between the two began, the voltage in the boxing ring peaked. The two confronted each other with all their strategies and worked hard for points. Valencia took the lead in the first round. Five judges gave her 49 points while Mary Kom was assigned only 46. That gave Valencia a 4-1 lead.
In the next two rounds, Mary Kom got three of the five judges to rule in her favour, but the scoreline was still in favour of Valencia. She clinched the third round too, but it didn’t help her to win.
However, Mary Kom lost to Valencia by a narrow margin in the first round. Overall, she lost 27-30, 28-29, 30-27, 28-29, 29-28. Maybe her career is over now!
Mary Kom, who beat Valencia in the 2019 World Championship Quarters, had to lose to her in the pre-quarterfinals of the Olympics. Valencia is the first female boxer to win an Olympic medal for Colombia.
