The trailer of ace director Mani Ratnam’s upcoming movie, Ponniyin Selvan, has been released today. The movie features an ensemble cast, which features Vikram, Prakash Raj, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, Jayam Ravi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Karthi and several others, all of whom play important roles in the movie, which is based on a novel of the same name, written by Tamil author Kalki. The movie has been Mani Ratnam’s forever dream, with the director saying several times that Ponniyin Selvan is his dream project.
The trailer opens with Rana Daggubati’s voice-over, introducing the Chola kingdom – one of India’s most glorious kingdoms. He introduces the key players of the Chola dynasty, and how the events of Ponniyin Selvan came into being.
Slowly, one by one, we are given a look into the various characters that play a key role in moving the story forward, and the various conflicts of the movie are set firmly within the trailer. The highlight of the trailer definitely has to be Aishwarya Rai, who plays Nandini, and the conflict that she has with Vikram’s character, Karikaludu.
On the whole, Ponniyin Selvan definitely promises its viewers a visual spectacle with huge political intrigue. The background score, composed by AR Rahman, perfectly fits the bill, suiting the grim and interesting nature of the film.
Ponniyin Selvan is the first part of a planned trilogy and is set to be released on September 1st. The film is carrying a good buzz, and it is to be seen how it will perform at the box office.
