Russian President Vladimir Putin announced today a military operation in Ukraine to defend rebels in the east of the country, called the Donbas region.
Although the situation between Russia and Ukraine had worsened, everyone thought the situation would be solved amicably with the intervention of other countries. But, the Russian President has stated that he will not back down on Ukraine and has announced that he will launch a military operation against the country.
Vladimir Putin’s main demand is that Ukraine and the former Soviet Union countries not be included in NATO. However, the United States and NATO did not agree with this demand. It is known that Ukraine has been separated from Russia in the past. Russia is currently arguing that there is a possibility that the West countries joining in NATO could pose a major threat to Russia’s security.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian President said it is the responsibility of UN to prevent the war. He stated he will defend his country from Russian attacks. He said the first step would be diplomatic efforts and the second step would be to deploy troops.
As per reports, Mr Putin had massed between 150,000 and 200,000 troops along the borders of Ukraine. Russia also called on Ukrainian soldiers to lay down their arms and justified the invasion.
