The newly detected Omicron variant of Coronavirus is ringing danger bells across the world. The virus, which is said to be more effective than the prior Delta variant, is spreading fast in India and the country reported as many as 73 cases in the last few days.
Three states — Tamil Nadu, Telangana and West Bengal — reported their first cases of Omicron variant on Wednesday, taking India’s tally to 73.
A man with a travel history to Nigeria was tested positive for Coronavirus in Tamil Nadu, making it the first confirmed case of the Omicron variant in the state. Meanwhile, a 23-year-old man from Somalia and a 24-year-old woman from Kenya have tested positive for the variant in Telangana. A seven-year-old boy who recently returned from Abu Dhabi via Hyderabad tested positive for Omicron in West Bengal.
Maharashtra has the highest number of Omicron cases. The state reported four fresh cases on Wednesday, taking the state’s tally to 32.
The new variant cases have also been recorded in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Delhi and Chandigarh.
