It is a common practice for cinema-goers to buy and enjoy popcorn while watching films. However, there have already been several complaints about the high prices of popcorn in multiplexes across the country. Adding to that, the new GST reforms announced by finance minister Nirmala SithaRaman adds more misery to this woe.
As per the latest communication from the finance minister, there will be different slabs of GST taxation on different varieties of popcorns at cinema theatres.
Unbranded and unpacked salt flavoured popcorn will come under 5% GST while branded popcorn with salt and other flavoring spices will come under 12% GST slab. Caramel flavoured popcorn will invite a whopping 18% taxation.
The fact that the GST department had the audacity to impose different taxation, slabs on different varieties of popcorn has invited countless trolls on social media.
Social media users are funnily commenting that it is better to smuggle sugar packets into cinema theatres to somehow enjoy sugary popcorn instead of buying caramel popcorn by paying atrocious tax prices apart from the usually high MRP.
