In a major development for Andhra Pradesh, the Union Government has issued the Gazette notification for the South Coast Railway (SCoR) Zone, with Visakhapatnam as its headquarters. The long-awaited decision is being seen as a significant step forward for the region’s infrastructure and economic growth.
Describing it as a historic milestone, Palla Srinivasa Rao said the announcement fulfills the long-standing aspirations of North Andhra. He noted that the railway zone has been a key demand for years and reflects the persistence of regional leadership and public support.
The notification, issued on May 4, 2026, confirms that the new zone will become operational from June 1. It will include major railway divisions such as Guntakal, Guntur, and Vijayawada, bringing administrative and operational focus to Visakhapatnam.
Srinivasa Rao credited N. Chandrababu Naidu for playing a crucial role in pushing the project forward. He stated that the Chief Minister’s continuous engagement with the Centre helped resolve pending issues, including land acquisition and administrative clearances, which had delayed the project in previous years.
He also acknowledged the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in accelerating the process. The coordinated efforts between the State and Central governments were key to moving the project ahead.
According to the TDP leader, the railway zone is expected to create large-scale employment opportunities and boost infrastructure development in the region. It is also likely to strengthen industrial growth, complementing recent investments by major companies in Visakhapatnam.
With improved railway connectivity and administrative focus, the new zone is expected to enhance logistics, support business expansion, and improve passenger services. The move is being widely viewed as a turning point that could position Visakhapatnam as a key railway and economic hub in the country.
