Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja became a sensational hit last year, surprising everyone with its success in Telugu. But the real shocker is its massive success in China, where it became a blockbuster despite language barriers.
In China, Indian films are typically dominated by Bollywood hits. Aamir Khan’s Dangal leads with 1480 crores, followed by Secret Superstar at 840 crores, and Andhadhun with 368 crores. Maharaja has now entered the top 10, securing the 10th spot with ₹92 crores, standing out as the only South Indian film in the list.
Unlike commercial films, Maharaja’s serious tone and gripping narrative earned critical acclaim. Interestingly, Baahubali 2 managed 80 crores, Baahubali 50 crores, and RRR 40 crores in China. With Maharaja still running, it may break the 100 crore mark, further proving its massive impact on Chinese viewers.
The film’s strong emotional core, revolving around a father seeking justice for his foster daughter, deeply resonated with Chinese audiences.
