Late Monday night rain coupled with 78 kms speed gales not only brought down the mighty floodlight tower at the Lal Bahadur stadium, but also two lives, include that of a five year old.
Death robbed the five-year when she was at play and the GST Commissionerate official was on his way back home walking after work. He came under the floodlight tower collapse at the Lal Bahadur stadium. He was identified as Satya Subramanyam, who was working as GST superintendent. He was walking towards the Lakdikapul station to board the Metro train and came under the floodlight tower collapse, according to news reports.
The deceased colleague, MM Ramesh, also suffered fractures and was admitted at a hospital in Nampally.
The Disaster Management wing of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Director Viswajit Kampati, said the one of the four floodlight tower collapsed due to the impact of strong winds. He said the structural strength of the other three towers will be evaluated soon.
The unseasonal rain, which lashed several parts of the city also plunged the city into darkness for the more than three hours. Uprooted trees, electric poles and rain water choked smooth flow of traffic at many places.
Malkajgiri recorded highest rainfall with 18.5 mm, followed by Secunderabad 15.33 mm, Begumpet 12.3 mm, Musheerabad 10.3mm and Patancheru 7mm.
Traffic snarls were reported from Gopalapuram, Marredpally, Trimulgherry and Abids.
One of the oldest trees at Trimulgherry’s Kendriya Vidyalaya also got uprooted.
