The United Arab Emirates on Saturday announced two new Emirates for its astronaut corps program, including the country’s first female astronaut.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, announced that Nora Al Matrooshi, UAE’s first female astronaut, and her male counterpart Mohammed Al-Mulla had been selected to be part of the country’s astronaut corps.
The two had been selected among over 4,000 applicants in the UAE and they will go through preparation at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.
As per the reports, the selection of the two new astronauts explains the UAE’s focus on equal spaces for women. We know that different space agencies are trying to create gender equality in the space sector, which has been male-dominated since the inception.
