Australia Test captain Tim Paine has resigned as captain after being investigated by Cricket Australia over sending a co-worker a string of lewd messages.
A recent investigation by Cricket Australia revealed that in 2017, he sent several messages to a woman in an obscene manner, including his photo. It was against this backdrop that the media came forward, claiming that he was ineligible to be the Aussie Test captain.
Although it was a difficult decision, he said it was good for him and his family for Australian cricket. In 2018, then-captain Steve Smith was caught up in a ball tampering controversy. He continued as captain for three years and eventually resigned.
However, the England-Australia team will play the prestigious Ashes series from the 8th of next month. Paine’s resignation from the captaincy ahead of this mega tournament is likely to have an impact on the team.
The governing body has accepted the resignation. “I’m announcing my decision to stand down as the captain of the Australian men’s Test team,” Paine told. He broke down in tears as he made the addresses the media, stressing that his actions did not meet the standard of an Australian Test captain.
