The United States has effectively banned TikTok, the popular Chinese social media platform. Following a Supreme Court ruling upholding a federal law, TikTok has been removed from app stores and is no longer functional for many users. This ban comes after the government raised concerns about national security risks associated with TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance.
TikTok, with a massive user base of around 170 million in the US, is now facing an uncertain future. Users are receiving notifications informing them of the ban and a potential temporary reprieve. President-elect Trump has hinted at a possible 90-day grace period after his inauguration, but this has not been confirmed.
This ban mirrors a similar action taken by India in 2020, which also banned TikTok due to security concerns.
In response to the potential ban, many TikTok users are migrating to RedNote, a Chinese social media platform that has quickly risen to the top of the Apple App Store.
