It was during the Telugu Desam Party’s regime that Amaravati was announced as the capital of Andhra Pradesh, with the then Chief Minister, Nara Chandrababu Naidu, promising the people of AP that he would build a world-class capital for them in Amaravati. As a result, several farmlands were bought by the government, which gave enough compensation to the farmers of those lands. The lands around Amaravati were declared green zones as well, for industrial development.
The TDP lost out big in the 2019 elections, and after the YSRCP came to power, Amaravati has been a lost cause, with the introduction of the 3 capitals bill. The TDP stood with the farmers of Amaravati and protested against the YSRCP’s bills, and everything seemed to be fine, especially following the HC’s orders, which ordered the government to develop Amaravati as the sole capital of AP. However, after it became clear that the YSRCP government was in no mood to go back on its 3 capitals idea, the TDP’s stance on Amaravati has been hopeless.
While the TDP continues to fight for Amaravati right now, with many of its campaigns focusing on the issue as well, promising the people of the state that Amaravati would be restored as the sole capital of AP if the TDP came to power in 2024; the TDP is said to be not so sure about whether or not it is supposed to continue supporting Amaravati, given that it is pretty much clear that the YSRCP is hellbent on not letting it happen. On the other hand, if the TDP stops pursuing Amaravati, then it would be like suicide for the already struggling party.
