Very famously, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy promised to prohibit alcohol consumption in the state on the whole, by the time his term ends, in the lead-up to the 2019 elections. While the CM seems to have tried to work this out during the initial stages of his rule, he seems to have forgotten it completely in recent years.
Cheap liquor is flowing everywhere in the state, with lower than sub-par brands being sold in the state, which are causing serious health problems to the people consuming them. An alarming number of people have also died as a result of these cheap brands. Taking strong opposition to this, the opposition Telugu Desam Party and all of its legislators took up a protest against the YSRCP government, and CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. They washed Jagan’s photos with liquor, saying this represents the condition of the state’s alcohol problem.
They also said that the state is overflowing with illicit arrack, marijuana and narcotic drugs. They have also requested a white paper from the assembly, with respect to the revenue earned from liquor in the state. It is now to be seen how the YSRCP will react.
