It is a known fact that the TDP failed to give stiff competition to the YSRCP in the recently concluded municipal elections. Out of 98 division in the GVMC, the TDP managed to win in just 30 divisions, while the YSRCP won in 56 divisions. While the TDP is very much aware that 30 seats are not enough to get the Mayor post, the party has decided to do it anyway.
The YSRCP has surpassed the majority requirement by a great margin, and the party would definitely vote for its own members when it comes to selecting the mayoral candidate. However, the high command of the TDP reportedly wanted to compete for the mayoral post at any cost, just because they did not want to give up the fight.
TDP president for Visakhapatnam parliamentary constituency Palla Srinivas Rao said that there’s no way the TDP is going to give up. Apart from having 30 seats, the TDP has 6 ex-officio seats, of which one belongs to Vasupalli Ganesh, who has unofficially joined the YSRCP.
Whether the TDP manages to win the Mayoral seat or not is secondary, the fact that it wishes to contest for the seat no matter what, is enough to create a lot of political intrigue and tensions.
