The Taliban officials, who have already ruled out democracy in their government, are making hasty decisions. Days after vowing to respect women’s rights in the country, the Taliban have banned co-education in government and private universities in the restive Herat province.
Taliban officials have banned male and female students from studying together in public and private universities, describing it as the root of all evils in society.
The decision was taken after a meeting between varsity professors, owners of private institutions, and Taliban authorities. It is also reported that worthy female lecturers would be permitted to teach only female students, but not male ones.
This is the first ‘fatwa’ issued by the Taliban after its speedy takeover of the country last week. In the last two decades, Afghanistan has enforced a mixed structure of co-education and gender-based separate courses in all universities and institutes.
