Two doses of the Coronavirus vaccine have been prescribed for everyone who is to receive the vaccine. According to a recent study though, it has been stated that those who have already been infected by the virus need only one dose of the vaccine, as the second dose hasn’t shown any improved results.
This study was conducted at the University of Pennsylvania in the US. From this study, it was found that Covid survivors had a robust antibody response after the first mRNA vaccine dose, but very little immune response was seen after the second dose.
On the other hand, those who were not infected by the virus, had the necessary immune response only after the second dose of the vaccine. Two vaccine doses are essential for antibody and B cell responses in those who are immunologically naive for SARS-CoV-2 (Coronavirus), and provide resistance to the more infectious and deadly South African variant.
This study has also helped in greatly understanding the production of antibodies that provide rapid immunity and the creation of memory B cells, which assist in long-term immunity. This is helpful for the better understanding of vaccine creation in the future.
BioNTech/Pfizer or Moderna mRNA Covid-19 vaccines have been given to 44 individuals during this study, of whom 11 had previously been infected with Coronavirus. Blood samples of these individuals were collected for deep immune analyses four times prior to and after vaccine doses.
