‘Slum Dog Husband’ is directed by AR Sreedhar and produced by Mic Movies. The film has been released in theatres despite competition from ‘BRO’. Let’s find out its hits and misses.
Plot:
Lacchi (Sanjay Rao) and Mounika (Pranavi Manukonda) are lovers in a slum in Hyderabad. On the advice of a priest, Lacchi decides to marry a dog named Baby (whose voice-over has been given by Vennela Kishore) to avoid a Dosham in his horoscope. The dog’s owner files a petition in a court against Lacchi’s decision to marry Mounika a week after marrying Baby.
This leads to some unexpected conflicts between the two. The second half is about courtroom proceedings and the character evolution of Lacchi.
Performances:
Sanjay Rao of ‘O Pitta Katha’ fame shows promise. He doesn’t behave like a commercial hero and his choices are also interesting. In the second half, he gets to do some emotions, especially in the climax. New actress Pranavi Manukonda has a romantic role and she is good despite the absence of typical glamorous songs.
Comedian Yadamma Raju plays the male lead’s friend. Brahmaji and Saptagiri are seen as lawyers named Salman Khan and David Mathews, respectively. They are funny. Ali has a cameo, while Raghu Karumanchi is seen as the male lead’s brother-in-law.
Technical Departments:
Bheems Ceciroleo’s songs are impressive, especially the ‘baraat’ song in the first half. The second half needed better songs so as to keep the audience enjoying some highs.
The cinematography by Srinivas J Reddy is average. The film is set for the most part in regular settings. So, the cinematographer didn’t have much scope to show his talent.
Plus Points:
- The storyline
- The human message.
- The comedy.
Minus Points:
- Average dialogues.
- Simplistic resolution.
Verdict: This film needed a better screenplay to do the magic. The premise is good. The absence of a backstory is also welcome. The courtroom humour should have been more original. In recent times, films set in Hyderabad have come up with original ideas. We can think of ‘DJ Tillu’ and ‘Jathi Ratnalu’. Although ‘Slum Dog Husband’ has got crazy characters, somehow the situations are not spicy enough.
