Shyam Singha Roy is a supernatural drama thriller film directed by Rahul Sankrityan. The film stars Nani (in a dual role) alongside Sai Pallavi, Krithi Shetty, and Madonna Sebastian. Set in the backdrop of Kolkata, the film is based on the theme of reincarnation. Here is what we felt after watching the film.
Story: Vasu Dev (Nani) is a happy go luck lad and he aspires to become a filmmaker. He makes a short film with Keerthy (Krithi) and following its success he gets the chance to make a feature film with her. This film turns out to be a successful venture and Vasu is flooded with offers now. But this is just about when the police arrest Vasu on copyright infringement grounds. Unintentionally, Vasu has been making films with stories that were penned by Shyam Singha Roy in the 1970’s. Who is this Shyam Singha Roy? How is he related to Vasu? What is the story behind Shyam, a fierce rebel?
What about on-screen performances?
Nani has excelled in the dual role. The Shyam Singha Roy role is obviously the challenging one and he delivers a spotless performance in the same. The attire and getup suits him. He carries the right intensity. Sai Pallavi is another standout. She oozes charm and has the right composure that is needed for the role. Dancing is one of her strong suites and she comes up with a winning dance performance in the Pranavalaya song. Her portrayal of a Devadasi is neat. Krithi is a glamour doll is alright. Madonna Sebastian gets a brief role and she does a fine job.
What about off screen talents?
Rahul Sankrityan has picked a periodic action drama subject and blended commercial elements with the same. The periodic Kolkata track is the crux of the film and it has been executed relatively well. The opening half doesn’t offer much on the story progression front but it has a breezy vibe. The proceedings are narrated at a decent pace. Nani’s struggles to become a filmmaker and his love track with Krithi are the focal points. The second half is when the real story sets in.
The Shyam Singha Roy track is high on intensity and it touches social topics that were relevant in the 70’s. Shyam’s rebellion against the Devadasi system and his revolt against the flawed social fabric are presented well. However, there are a fair few laggy scenes in the latter half. This takes a toll on the tempo. Also, there is not enough logical reasoning that goes into the murder of Shyam Singha Roy plot. This results in a weak climax which ends the film on a rather subdued note. Also, we get a feeling that there is a bit too much of audio track in the latter half.
Mickey J Meyer’s songs are half-decent but his background score is of top quality. Sanu John Varghese’s visual storytelling is at can get. He sets the tone of the film with his brilliant cinematography. The production design is good and so are the production values.
What’s Hot ?
- Nani’s acting
- Background Music
- Cinematography
What’s Not ?
- Too much of audio track in second half
- Not enough reasoning for Shyam Singha Roy’s Death
- Unnecessary scenes in Second half
Verdict: Shyam Singha Roy is a periodic action drama which has enough elements going its way to keep the audience hooked. The opening half is breezy and the latter half which runs on the Shyam Singha Roy track has the right intensity for most parts. But there are many stretched out scenes towards the end which tamper the flow of the film. But as a whole, Shyam Singha Roy is a well-packaged action drama with a good plot.
