Saikhom Mirabai Chanu has made Indians proud by bagging a silver in the 49kg weightlifting category at the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020. She claimed India’s first medal on Day 1 in Japan.
As per reports, Mirabai lifted 84kg in her first attempt and then settled with 87kg in her second attempt. She failed her final attempt (89kg).
China’s HOU Zhihu, who lifted 94kg to create an Olympic record, has bagged first place. However, it is two kgs below her own world record.
On the other hand, Mirabai Chanu created a new Olympic record with a successful lift of 115kg in clean and jerk.
Karnam Malleswari was the only Indian weightlifter to have won an Olympic medal, a bronze in the 69kg category at the 2000 Sydney Games.
