Regina Cassandra and Nivetha Thomas’ comedy crime drama, Saakini Daakini directed by Sudheer Varma has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.
Story:
Damini( Regina) and Shalini( Nivetha Thomas) land in the police academy as trainees. Initially, both Damini and Shalini will not be in good terms and get into cat fights, but eventually, they become good friends. One midnight, Damini and Shalini witness the kidnapping of a girl. Despite reporting to the cops, police takes it easy . Left with no option, the girls take up the investigation and while tracking the case, they both come to know that the kidnap is done by a gang which is running a mature egg harvesting (for IVF treatment) racket. The rest of the story is about how Damini and Shalini solve the case and save the young girls by using the knowledge they learnt in police training.
On-screen performances:
Both Regina Cassandra and Nivetha Thomas gave very good performances. While Regina is good with her usual acting, Nivetha Thomas’ stole the show with her acting and comedy punches. She brings a fresh vibe to the first half.
Raghu Babu, 30 Years Prudhvi, Sudarshan, Chamak Chandra, Satya are okay with their comedy roles. Other artists like Bhanu Chander as police academy incharge did his part neatly.
Off-screen Talents:
Director Sudheer Idea of remaking the Korean film Midnight Runners in Telugu as a female-centric actioner is good but he would have worked more on the script/writing as it is a routine story (we have seen an ample number of movies on organ theft rackets and the only novel concept here is IVF egg harvesting). Director should have focused on scenes where the leading ladies explain the reasons for them joining the academy as they both do not have a strong reason/emotion.
The cinematography work by Richard Prasad is apt for the film’s genre. The night shots are canned nicely by using a good lighting setup. Editing work by Viplav Nyshadam is adequate. Background Music by Mikey McCleary is just okay. Production values for this limited-budget movie are good.
Positive Points:
- Lead artists performance
- Breezy first half
- Compact runtime
Negative Points:
- Lacks emotional connectivity
- Routine proceedings
Verdict:
Saakini Daakini is a crime comedy-drama that revolves around a serious issue related to women’s egg harvesting mafia. Though the first half is good with some fun-filled moments, the momentum in the later half is not carried as the story gets routine and lacks strong emotions. All we suggest is to keep a check on your expectations and watch the film.

Final Report: 2nd half doesn’t meet expectations because of routine and emotionally weak proceedings.. as always watch this space for first on net review
