Varalakshmi Sarathkumar takes a bold step in her career by turning director with S Saraswathi. Backed by a strong ensemble that includes Prakash Raj, Priyamani, and Nassar, the film released in theatres today. Let’s take a closer look at what the film delivers.

Story

Laxmi (Varalakshmi Sarathkumar) is a nurse leading a simple life with her daughter, Saraswathi (Niviksha). One day, Laxmi drops her daughter off at school as usual. But when she returns, the school authorities claim that no such child exists. Shocked and desperate, Laxmi insists that her daughter studies there, but no one believes her. As the investigation unfolds, several disturbing revelations surface. What are those, and what is the story behind these illusions forms the crux of the film.

What about on screen performances?

Varalakshmi Sarathkumar deserves appreciation for choosing a psychological and emotional subject for her first directorial venture.

As an actor, Varalakshmi performs sincerely and captures the emotional turmoil of a mother searching for her missing child. She particularly shines during the intense investigative portions and the courtroom sequences.

Priyamani is a top actress and brings a lot of depth to the film. The way her character is etched and the manner in which the actress plays it is very good.

The central concept is intriguing and manages to create curiosity in the early stages. The supporting cast adds strength to the narrative.

Actors like Prakash Raj, Rao Ramesh, and Murali Sharma deliver dependable performances and bring credibility to their roles.

What about off screen talents?

Cinematographer A. M. Edwin Sakay captures the film’s mood fairly well, while Thaman’s music works only in select moments.

Editor Venkat Rajan could have trimmed certain scenes to keep the film more engaging. The production values are decent overall.

Varalakshmi Sarathkumar shows potential as a filmmaker, but the storytelling could have been tighter, especially in the latter half. However, a few emotional scenes are handled effectively and help the film stay engaging in parts.

Some twists that are meant to surprise the audience do not land as effectively as intended. Despite an interesting premise, the film gradually loses its grip. The narrative starts off with intrigue but soon becomes predictable.

Several experienced actors including Nassar, Murali Sharma, Radhika Sarathkumar, and Jiiva appear in supporting roles but are not given enough depth or screen time to make a strong impact.

Some courtroom sequences raise logical questions, and a few plot points feel underdeveloped. The flashback portions could have carried more emotional weight to strengthen the narrative.

What’s Hot?

  • Story Idea
  • Varalaxmi performance
  • A few twists

What’s Not?

  • Slow pace
  • Too many cameos
  • Lack of depth in emotions

Verdict

Oveall, S. Saraswathi has an intriguing idea but falls short in its execution. Varalakshmi Sarathkumar makes a sincere attempt both as a director and actor, but the predictable screenplay and uneven pacing hold the film back. Those who love social dramas with multiple thrills can give this film a shot but keep your expectations in check.
