Russia is struggling with a rapid surge of Covid-19 infections and lagging vaccination rates. The pandemic is suffocating the country again. The deaths that have been recorded there for some time now are reversing past records. On Tuesday alone, a record 973 people were killed due to Covid-19, officials said. This is the highest daily toll since the start of the pandemic.
In the past 24 hours, 28,199 new cases have been reported in Russia, officials said. A total of more than 7.8 million positive cases have been reported across the country so far. Russia has the highest number of covid deaths in Europe. Authorities, however, have been adamant there will be no new national lockdown.
The month of September has seen an increase in the number of Kovid cases and deaths in Russia. Officials estimate that this is due to the sluggish distribution of the vaccine.
Russia has announced that it has registered the world’s first vaccine but lags far behind other countries in distribution. In Russia, with a population of about 14.6 million, only 33 percent have received the first dose of the vaccine and over 29 percent have taken two doses, the government said.
