A controversy has erupted after PM Narendra Modi’s government has renamed Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award to Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
The BJP government renaming the prestigious award after hockey legend Dhyan Chand has been welcomed by common people as well as the opposition parties. Needless to say, everyone feels that sporting awards should be named after sportspersons and not politicians.
Now, the social media users and opposition parties point out a cricket stadium named after Narendra Modi. They called for the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to be renamed after a sportsperson.
Congress MP Revanth Reddy said the Prime Minister should rename the world’s largest cricket stadium to a cricketer’s name.
In a tweet, Revanth Reddy wrote: “After renaming the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award to Dhyanchand Khel Ratna award, we demand the PM to rename the world’s largest cricket stadium from Narendra Modi stadium to a cricketer’s name. And also Arun Jaitley stadium in Delhi to some cricket legend’s name.”
In February 2020, the Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad, usually known as Motera Stadium, was renamed after Narendra Modi, who was the president of the Gujarat Cricket Association.
