After former President Gotabaya Rajapakasa resinged amid a huge economic crisis, Sri Lanka lawmakers have now elected a new president for the Island nation.
Six-time former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been elected as the president of Sri Lanka. While Wickremesinghe got 134 votes, his main opponent Dullas Alahapperuma secured 82 and leftist front’s leader Anura Dissanayake just three.
Soon after Wickremesinghe was elected as president, his supporters gathered outside the Presidential palace in Colombo to celebrate the victory. However, protesters are raising slogans against Wickremesinghe in various parts of Sri Lanka as they consider him as an ally of Rajapakasa’s family.
